  • Description

Philippe Grisvard has chosen the repertoire of composers from the court of Frederick II, thus continuing Ensemble Diderot's comprehensive exploration of the style of the Berlin School. After early French violin concertos with Johannes Pramsohler and North German cello concertos with Gulrim Choi, it is now the turn of Ensemble Diderot's harpsichordist to distinguish himself in this genre with these world premiere recordings.

The decision not to include Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in this program facilitates the rehabilitation and rediscovery of composers whose contribution to the concerto genre is no less important. The result is a completely new program of virtuoso works in which the spirit of Bach father and son shines through time and again.

"Grisvard's perky, colourful playing (on a 2015 copy of an 18th century harpsichord) makes the best possible case for these unknown pieces: as is usually the case with releases from this team, education and entertainment are combined in a single handy package. Excellent, scholarly notes and superb engineering too – a winner." - The Arts Desk

"The Bach influence is palpable throughout, the works immaculately crafted and with genuine spark and lyrical fluency. Such stylish performances – easeful and teasing, but never complacent – make for pleasurable rediscovery." - The Scotsman ****

FEATURED - BBC RADIO 3 RECORD REVIEW

"In addition to the sometimes stupendous virtuosity that Grisvard effortlessly masters, these compositions all offer little surprises that keep the listener's attention. […] It is not only the fine, taut realization of all the dynamic turns that provides the greatest listening pleasure, but also the spontaneity and freshness of the performance." – Pizzicato ****

    PRESTO MUSIC: FULL FEATURE INTERVIEW

"Soloist Philippe Grisvard has energy and precision, but at the same time the singing tome and intelligent ornamentation the music needs to keep it alive […]. These performances are surely everything the composers could have asked for." – Gramophone

"For those seeking the unusual: something of a disc for the connoisseur, with the Ensemble Diderot showcasing harpsichordist Philippe Grisvard" – Classical CD Choice

"an absorbingly interesting album, stylishly played and with a lively feeling for subtle nuance" – BBC Music Magazine *****

"Grisvard gives a sensitive interpretation. The cooperation between him and the ensemble is immaculate. […] Given the quality of these concertos and the performances, and the fact that all four concertos are here recorded for the first time, this issue merits a special recommendation." – MusicWeb International

"Grisvard – who performs a mixture of original and self-penned cadenzas – is a modestly communicative player thoroughly versed in the style of the day. If you enjoy something off the beaten track, these four byways from the notable period fertilized by Prussia's musical monarch should be just the ticket." - Limelight
