A collection of 10 brand new, original songs, many of which feel destined to become modern Christmas classics, conjures the spirit of Joni Mitchell's "The River" or John Lennon's "War Is Over," and yet the recordings have a unique groove all their own.
Sometimes playful, sometimes dark, the album is full of upright bass, piano, beautiful textures and some wonderful, unexpected pop twists thanks to the occasionally Phil Spector-like hi-jinx of producer Brad Jones (Matthew Sweet, Josh Rouse, Ron Sexsmith). "All I Ever Get For Christmas is Blue" sounds like it could have been written either yesterday or 50 years ago, and singer Karin Bergquist has never sounded more torchy or inspired. "Darlin (Christmas Is Coming)" is a timeless pop song sure to receive radio airplay. The title track is a Civil War tale, an unforgettable protest song that leaves a lump in the throat because of its relevance to all-too-current events.
In late 2006, Over The Rhine did a pressing of 5,000 copies of SNOW ANGELS. The initial run quickly sold out by word-of-mouth and the album charted on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart with no outside publicity or distribution. The band has been receiving email ever since from people who have heard the music wondering how they can get their own copy. -
