Description
Of the many 'Fabulous Fives', those five piece jazz bands that sprung up in the late 'teens and early 1920s following the astounding success of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, by far the most successful and longest-lived was the Original Memphis Five. Formed by five young men in 1918 with high hopes of capitalising on the ODJB's fame and the rush by dance halls and nightclubs for similar-styled groups, a band was still operating under that name in the 1950s. These 25 sides from 1923 through to 1931 have been beautifully restored by John R T Davies and feature Phil Napoleon (trumpet), Miff Mole (trombone), Jimmy Lytell (clarinet), Frank Signorelli (piano), Ray Kitchingham (banjo), Jack Roth (drums), Billy Jones (vocals), Charles Panelli (trombone), Josepth A Griffith (vocals), Tommy Dorsey (trombone), Jimmy Dorsey (clarinet, alto sax) and Ted Napoleon (drums).
