Cool grooves, atmospheric samples, the clear voice of a solitary trumpet, now keenly articulated now longingly whispering ... Anybody who gives this production some attention will understand why producer and bass guitarist Dal Martino and his partner, the prominent trumpet player Reiner Winterschladen, have chosen the name of "Nighthawks" for their first joint project as a duo - inspired by Edward Hopper's famous 1941 painting of the same name. The idea of making recordings as a duo was put into their heads during a joint commissioned production for a film project, which bacame "Love's End". From then on, Martino and Winterschladen used every breather to make progress on the new collaboration, mostly long after dark.
Dal Martino preproduced tracks in his studio and then presented them to Reiner Winterschladen - at every possible opportunity - who gave them melodic contours and/or improvised on them; they listened, revised, modified, rearranged, searched, found. Everything came up in a free fall, so to speak.And there is no doubt that their enterprise has been successful: The centre of the album is the 'Bronco Suite' consisting of three pieces and winking at the Western cliches mentioned - a homage paid by Dal Martino to his favourite film music composer Ennio Morricone ("C'era una volta il West", and many others) - while the other titles evoke superbly the big-city scenery at night.
