Description
High energy jazz is the cornerstone of Italian group Nexus, this reissue of their 1983 debut album includes one bonus track and is appearing on CD for the first time. Originally a quartet, it expanded to a quintet in 1983 with the addition of trumpeter Pino Minafra. It was this expanded lineup that recorded their popular crowd pleaser Open Mouth Blues composed by the group's drummer Tiziano Tononi.
The group's work is as lively as ever here, full of bold, affirmative moods and colours, and containing all the jazz we might call post-Mingusian, though not without emblematic archaic reminiscences; the crackling colours of marching bands, Minafra's muted trumpet style reminiscent of Ellingtonian jungle style, and Bonvini's generous trombone, echoing Roswell Rudd and Kid Ory. One can also hear the influence and spirit of Roland Kirk and The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Tiziano Tononi dedicated a memorable triple album to Roland Kirk titled We Did It, We Did It (Splasc(h) Records, 1999)
Daniele Cavallanti: tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone
Pino Minafra: trumpet, flugelhorn
Luca Bonvini: trombone, sackbut
Paolino Dalla Porta: bass, kalimba, tambourine
Tiziano Tononi: drums, percussion, marimba
Recorded at Barigozzi Studio, Milan, June 24 & 25, 1983.
