Description
Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is one of four albums drawn from the legendary Van Gelder sessions of May and October 1956, in which Miles Davis and his first great quintet recorded enough material in two extended afternoons to fulfil his Prestige contract and free himself to record exclusively for Columbia. The other sessions produced Workin', Cookin', and Relaxin'. What is remarkable about all four albums - and particularly about Steamin' - is how unhurried and deeply musical the results are, given the circumstances.
The highlights here are many: a joyful, playful Surrey With The Fringe On Top that shows the quintet in an unusually lighthearted mood; a heartbreaking When I Fall In Love that features Davis at his most intimate and lyrical; and John Coltrane's own Diane, a tender ballad that reveals a gentler side of the saxophonist more often associated with sheets of sound. Red Garland's piano is particularly beautiful throughout, and Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers provide the kind of rhythm section that makes even the most familiar material feel freshly minted.
This Jazz Wax Records reissue presents Steamin' on 180-gram vinyl, making one of the most beloved entries in the Miles Davis discography available in premium vinyl form.
