Newly re-mastered and expanded 2 CD edition of the classic 1968 self-titled album by MIKE McGEAR & ROGER McGOUGH. A joyous potpourri of late 60s psychedelic rock, poetry and humour, McGOUGH & McGEAR is a highly sought after album from a free thinking era in British culture.
As members of Liverpool comic poetry group The Scaffold, Roger McGough and Mike McGear (a pseudonym adopted by Mike McCartney - brother of Paul) had signed to Parlophone Records in 1966 and had begun working with producer George Martin. The McGOUGH & McGEAR album was the result of recording sessions at various studios in London in 1967. Paul McCartney assisted in the production of the record and a host of well-known musicians guested on the sessions, albeit uncredited. Alongside Mike's elder brother, the musicians included such luminaries as JIMI HENDRIX, GRAHAM NASH, DAVE MASON (Traffic), JOHN MAYALL, SPENCER DAVIS, PAUL SAMWELL SMITH (Yardbirds) and VIV PRINCE (Pretty Things).
Even in those enlightened and experimental times, the sheer diversity of styles on the album was notable. From the psychedelia of 'So Much' and 'Ex-Art Student' (both featuring Jimi Hendrix on guitar) to the poetry of 'Summer With Monika' and the satire of 'Little Bit of Heaven', McGOUGH & McGEAR is a joyous listening experience. The album's reputation (and impressive cast of contributors) has led to the original vinyl albums changing hands for huge sums of money.
This Esoteric Recordings edition has been re-mastered from the original master tapes and features both the stereo mix and the mono mix of the album over two CDs for the very first time. The reissue restores the original album artwork and liner notes by Beatles' biographer Hunter Davies and also features a new essay with an exclusive and extensive interview with Mike (McGear) McCartney.

Roger McGough and Mike McGear were members of The Scaffold, a British music/poetry/comedy act that scored several hits (most notably "Thank U Very Much," "Lily the Pink" and "Liverpool Lou") on the British charts during the '60s and '70s, when they recorded this album in 1967. However, none of those hits appear here, and the album itself never made the charts. So why does this record trade for hundreds of dollars in collector circles? Well, for starters, Mike McGear's given name is Mike McCartney, and his well-known brother guests on and helped to produce the album. But like we said, that's just for starters�though you wouldn't know it from the album credits. A virtual cavalcade of British and American rock royalty appear on this record, including John Mayall, Spencer Davis, Paul Samwell-Smith, Graham Nash and Hendrix! Essential '60s pop culture!
