Description
The original drummer for The Blue Notes, and sadly now the only surviving original member, Louis Moholo-Moholo here pays tribute to what was not only a great band but one that, on arrival from apartheid South Africa, grew to have a profound and lasting impact on the British jazz scene. Moholo's Unit is in itself a fair rival to the Blue Notes - a rollicking amalgam of young and old (mostly-) UK faces, with Alexander Hawkins a vital presence on the piano and a horn section featuring Jason Yarde and Ntshuks Bonga alongside Henry Lowther and Alan Tomlinson. Little time to draw breath. This new album is a live recording of the Unit made in Italy last year and ably demonstrates the verve and excitement it can generate.
