Description
The original lifespan of iconic jazz big band Loose Tubes, from 1984 until 1990, was incredibly short, given the band's impact and influence. The first part of this album is the third and final release from its farewell residency at Ronnie Scott's, indicating just why that impact was so profound. The historical material is complemented by three superb tracks recorded at Ronnie's during their 30th anniversay concert in 2014.
Played with passion, flair, finesse and - simultaneously - a beguiling informality, the sweep of the music is enormous. There's the melancholy depth of Chris Batchelor's solo on John Harborne's "A", or the tripping clowns and musical high wire ensemble of Django Bates' "Nights at the Circus". In between there's Dai Pritchard's Balkan-flavoured clarinet and the collective dash of "Eden Express".
Despite passing references to many a genre, many another innovator, many a musical tradition around the world, it was the entire cocktail that made the band such an irresistible force, as in the infectious vamp of the record's title track.
