Description
Seeing John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy live in 1961 was a mind-blowing, almost spiritual. This was Coltrane at a turning point, pushing the boundaries of jazz into something cosmic, searching, and deeply personal. his signature "sheets of sound" fully developed, but now expanding into more modal and avant-garde territory. He played with a relentless drive, stretching melodies far beyond their original form, almost like an incantation.
Eric Dolphy's contributions were equally ground-breaking. His alto sax had an angular, almost speech-like quality, and his bass clarinet work added deep, resonant textures that sounded otherworldly.
This was jazz at the edge--raw, uncompromising, and deeply spiritual. If you were lucky enough to be in that room, you'd have left changed. Off Beat brings you two live radio broadcasts from Finland and Germany respectively to document these masters at work.
