Description
Jens Wendelboe, Danish trombonist, big band leader, writer and arranger, might be an unfamiliar name to many here in the UK, but his résumé of work and achievements from 1975 to this day confirm his statues across Europe and USA as a formidable musicians in both jazz and popular music. As well as being an arranger and leader of his own big bands and quartet, he's also credited for his collaborations with jazz artists such as Slide Hampton, Phil Woods, Bill Watrous, and Monty Alexander. On the other side of his résumé, and this is where his name recognitions might come in, he was the conductor and arranger for 1970s 'Queen of Disco', Donna Summer, and between 2006 - 2014 he was the regular trombonist with legendary American jazz/rock band Blood, Sweat and Tears.
'Against All Odds' was recorded and mixed in the USA in January 2020 through to August 2021, so right in the middle of pandemic! All the compositions are by Jens Wendelboe and range from big band swing, jazz funk, through to easy-listening-pop arrangements with jazz sensibilities. A 17-piece American orchestra of seasoned players with Wendelboe filling the trombone solo chair himself, plus among others, outstanding solos from Kris Yunker on Hammond B3 (Triplet Whisky) and Australian singer Stephanie Harrison on a power-ballad 'Chasing Rainbows', reminiscent of something that could have featured in a block-buster movie. It's a mixed bag, but one that sits well with big band enthusiasts, be they jazz or popular music followers.
