Description
Reinventing the harp in the world of jazz is no mean feat and yet this is exactly what Greek born electric jazz harpist and composer Maria-Christina Harper has done. Eschewing tradition, she uses her instrument in new and thrilling ways to create a unique and compelling sound where East meets West.
'Passing By' is a powerful debut recording of shimmering soundscapes and psychedelic sounds that flirt with the avant-garde creating an inventive slice of spiritual jazz. The highly acclaimed drummer's-drummer Evan Jenkins and the dynamic saxophonist Josephine Davies (Instrumentalist of The Year, 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Awards) complete the trio to present original music composed by Maria-Christina. Following the release of two singles, 'Passing By' was released October 2023 to significant critical acclaim, establishing The Harper Trio as a new voice at the forefront of contemporary jazz.
Maria-Christina Harper studied classical piano and harp in Athens, then at London's Royal Academy. Disillusioned with the years of rigid, intense practicing of classical technique that left little room for musical self-expression, she found her way to studying Music Therapy with its focus on improvisation, something she describes as "a revelation". And so began her journey in jazz.
All three members of Harper Trio are part of the musical exodus to the seaside town of Hastings and is where they met. 'Passing By', the title track, examines the notion that we are all 'passing by', hopefully observing, learning, and creating as we go. It draws heavily on Hastings' surrounding landscape for inspiration, as did the tracks 'Standing Alone' and 'East Hill Meditation'.
