Description
Using original instruments, this premier recording of Pasqualini Demarzi's charming sonatas captures the graceful ambience of an 18th-century recital - intimate, playful, melodic. Typical of the Gallant style, Demarzi's melodies point to the elegance and clarity of the Classical style, yet with the figuration so typical of the Baroque. The sonatas are interspersed with traditional tunes of the day played solo, giving voice to the cetra's many other colours. Contains booklet with extensive historical notes.
"Gorgeous!" - Jamie Catto, One Giant Leap
"Well done, Doc. A great recording." - Rob MacKillop, Scottish lute and guitar player
"Doc's album is exceptionally good and his English guittar cittern playing is probably closer to the intentions of the 18th century composers.... It takes a lot of effort to be a baroque cittern player because the music mostly doesn't relate to any genre we are used to today. It is not really classical, it's not regional, it isn't folk, and nor is it 'baroque' in the chamber group or orchestral sense. Doc's is more melodic and cheerful, and given that these little instruments were mainly played by young ladies in bright drawing-rooms between fighting off the advances of Italian dancing-masters, probably truer to the period." - David Kilpatrick
