  • Description

This new album by Eric Random coincides with the start of the last Cabaret Voltaire tour, for which Eric has joined as a member. The album marks a contrast to his most recent releases, less dance-oriented and with a darker pop tone and a cinematic, soundtrack-like atmosphere.

    Eric Random - Biography

Eric Random is a cult figure of the British electronic scene and one of the true pioneers of post-punk electronica. Born in 1961 and growing up in Manchester, Random was drawn to music through his older siblings and was given a guitar by his father. In 1978, he joined Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks and drummer Francis Cookson to form The Tiller Boys, an experimental trio that debuted supporting Joy Division at Manchester's Factory Club. The band's brief existence ended in October 1979.

After the group disbanded, Random founded Free Agents and became involved with the Sheffield electronic underground, working closely with Cabaret Voltaire and recording his first solo material at their Western Works Studios. During this period, he developed a distinctive sound language blending industrial minimalism, electro-funk, and electronic experimentation.

In the early 1980s, Random formed The Bedlamites, a group that explored a fusion of electronic, post-punk, and world music elements. Random also broadened his musical scope through collaborations with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, which sparked his interest in Sufi music and led him to spend extended periods in India. Around the same time, he joined The Faction, the final band of Nico (of The Velvet Underground). From 1982 until her passing, he toured and performed with her, notably playing the tabla at her 1986 solo concert at The Live Inn in Shibuya, Tokyo.

An independent artist and tireless sonic explorer, Eric Random remains a vital link between the post-punk legacy and contemporary electronic music.
