Description
The newly remastered album features the theme to the BBC's acclaimed and multi-award-winning adaptation of Henning Mankell's Wallander novels, starring Kenneth Branagh. Despite the Snow had already been garnering praise from the press when a chance meeting between Emily Barker and composer Martin Phipps resulted in the album's opening track, 'Nostalgia', being used as the Wallander theme.
It was almost exactly eight years ago, on the Easter weekend of 2008, that Emily Barker & her erstwhile band, The Red Clay Halo, hid themselves away in an old barn in the Norfolk countryside to record what would become their first album. That weekend, temperatures plummeted across the country and it snowed relentlessly. Emily called the album Despite the Snow and released it in September that same year, with not the slightest idea of what was about to happen...
'Nostalgia' went on to win a Royal Television Society award for best original TV theme, and Emily has continued to work in TV and film, including two more with Martin Phipps (cult noir thriller The Shadow Line and The Keeping Room, starring Sam Worthington and Brit Marling), and her first full film soundtrack, for Jake Gavin's debut feature, Hector, starring Peter Mullan.
The much anticipated fourth and final season of Wallander has been announced and is due be shown on BBC TV in May, with 'Nostalgia' once again being used as the title music. To coincide with the conclusion of the series, the album has been remastered by vinyl specialists Gearbox Records and pressed at Optimal in Germany.
Emily played her final shows with The Red Clay Halo in November 2014 and has since gone on to record and release The Toerag Sessions, featuring solo performances of songs from her back catalogue, recorded live to tape at ToeRag Studios in London. The album was nominated for Americana Album of the Year in this year's inaugural UK Americana Awards. She is also part of the trio collaboration Applewood Road with Amy Speace and Amber Rubarth.
In June, Emily heads to Memphis to record her new solo album at Sam Phillips Recording Service, with grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang at the helm.
