Description
In 1957, Don Gibson travelled back to Nashville to record "Oh Lonesome Me" for RCA. He and producer Chet Akins decided to abandon the traditional steel guitar and fiddle and use a new sound featuring only guitars, a piano, a drummer, upright bass, and background singers. It became one of the first examples of what would be called the Nashville Sound and earned Gibson a #1 hit. A superlative songwriter, many of his songs have become country classics, covered by a wide range of artists, including Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Emmylou Haris, Neil Young, and M. Ward.
This release presents two of Don Gibson's finest LPs: his wonderful debut album 'Oh Lonesome Me' (1958), including the iconic title track, and the long unavailable 'Girls, Guitars and Gibson' (1961). Originally released by the RCA Victor imprint, both have been remastered and packaged together in this collector's edition, which also contains 7 bonus tracks from the same period. Some of Gibson's finest songs are featured here, making this set an essential addition to any country music collection.
"Never deliberately flashy, Don Gibson had an unerring ability to take complex emotions and turn them into deceptively simple-sounding songs." - Steve Legget (All Music Guide)
