Description
Dermabrasion have peddled their fleshy post-punk in Toronto with a deceptively ferocious live show that has landed them supporting slots for the likes of Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, Special Interest, Pixel Grip, Nox Novacula and Front 242's Patrick Codenys.
Their 2021 demo EP "Lunate" marked the return of Adam Bernhardt and Kat McGouran who started performing together in 2015 with defunct punk band WLMRT. "Lunate" had a low-fi production that smacked of early Sisters of Mercy and offered only a haunting, shadowy outline of what they now bring forward with their full-length debut, "Pain Behaviour".
Produced by Josh Korody (Fucked Up, Dilly Dally, Breeze), "Pain Behaviour" completes the baleful statement Dermabrasion first uttered with "Lunate". Korody's experience with electronic music helped hone the band's sound to a menacing edge they call "death rock and roll," swinging equally in the directions of first wave and contemporary post-punk, industrial, and NWOBHM.
"With guitar bursts akin to a barbed-wire hailstorm and a stabbing, skeletal rhythm section, Dermabrasion sound like some macabre approximation of Siouxsie & the Banshees going on an acid binge with Locust Abortion Technician-era Butthole Surfers" - BEATS PER MINUTE
"A crunching statement of intent" - CLASH MAGAZINE
"A timeless classic which will span many generations to come" "early contender for my album of the year" - ALBUM OF THE WEEK - LOUDER THAN WAR
"If an atmospheric goth rock record is what they wanted, they were ridiculously successful" - 9/10 - CULT MTL
"Runs the gamut from industrialist new wave to punky death rock - invokes the abrasive history of hardcore" - FLOOD
"A moody mix of the Sisters Of Mercy and Bauhaus, topped with Siouxsie Sioux vocals. That's no mean feat" - CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE
"CHART: Best New Music" - KERRANG!
"NME'S NEW BANGERS" - NME
