  • Description

Deer Leader return with their second full-length release, The Bluebirds of Happiness, on independent label Last Night From Glasgow. More urgent and thematically expansive, the album marks a clear evolution in their sound. If their debut album was an inward-looking search for identity in a world of spiralling individualism, The Bluebirds of Happiness turns its gaze outward -- one that confronts the shifting role of the individual within the collective.

Working with between experienced producers Andy Miller (Mogwai, Life Without Buildings) and Chris Gordon (Union of Knives, Baby Chaos), The Bluebirds of Happiness sees the band sharpen their sound -- drawing influence from the atmospheric decay of Low's most recent records, the mechanical tension of Nine Inch Nails, the emotive math rock of American Football, and the rhythmic drive of Can's krautrock.

The Bluebirds of Happiness grapples with the complexities of collective identity and the darker sides of modern society. Throughout the album, Deer Leader explores how fear, misinformation, and ideological extremism shape group dynamics, from right-wing grifters and algorithmic radicalisation in "Year of the Dragon..." and the paralysis of a nostalgic, fractured left in "Report" to the toxic masculinity of "Tyrannosaur" and exploitation of the vulnerable in "Lark Ascending". The album looks through surreal, often nightmarish lenses--drawing on myth, cults, and twisted modern folklore.
