Description
A collection of Scottish and American folk songs from an award-wining ‘one-man transatlantic session’ (Sunday Herald).
David Ferrard’s new album of Scottish and American folk songs explores his transatlantic roots, highlighting a wealth of shared traditions connecting the two countries. Born and raised in Edinburgh to a Scottish father and an American mother, the singer-songwriter lays down his pen to interpret thirteen songs, some contemporary, most traditional, including compositions by Robert Burns and Stephen Foster.
David recorded the album in a small studio in the Blue Ridge Mountains with multi-instrumentalist bluegrass and old-time player Josh Goforth, whom he met whilst gigging at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections in 2007. Shortly after David travelled to Josh’s mountain community in Western North Carolina, an area first settled by Scottish emigrants. There he learned from traditional ballad singers, some of whose material he interprets on the album. David said ‘My mother is from the Appalachians so these songs struck a real chord. It was fascinating to hear so many folk songs, which must have travelled over from Scotland hundreds of years ago, being kept alive.’ Josh’s guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and bass accompaniment lends an old-time yet contemporary feel to the album.
Josh Goforth producer and multi-instrumental has been nominated for a Grammy in the Traditional Folk category
