Description
Roman Statkowski’s opera Maria achieved the very rare status of being one of the first productions abroad, extremely rare in Polish opera.
In the autumn of 2011, Maria was staged at the Wexford Festival Opera (a production also presented soon afterwards at the Baltic State Opera in Gdansk), and in the spring of 2018 it was shown at the Staatstheater in Oldenburg.
The present CD adds another chapter to the phonographic history of Statkowski’s opera, in the form of Kuba Stankiewicz’s jazz fantasy of that work’s themes.
Together with the accompanying musicians – saxophonist Daniel Rotem, bassist Dariusz Oleszkiewicz, and drummer Tina Raymond –Stankiewicz focused on seven key
musical-dramatic motifs from the original two hour opera, which, he believed, offered the greatest artistic potential both to a jazz musician and to composers of film music.
