Description
With Heat Sin Water Skin, BettySoo adds welcome grit to the heartbreaker ballads and bell-pure vocals she’s known for. Teamed with producer Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Slaid Cleaves), BettySoo made a record worth paying attention to. Her vocals are striking, the players strong, the songs compelling.
Earning wide praise with early efforts (Let Me Love You, 2005; Little Tiny Secrets, Never the Pretty Girl, 2007), she hasn’t slowed down. Since their release, she’s amassed songwriting awards and wowed audiences as a powerful performer.
Joining her on the album are Todd Wilson (organ), Gene Elders (fiddle), and Dave Terry (drums). BettySoo and Gurf handled guitars and vocals themselves. Securely nestled in folk-rock, she brings something new: “a little gospel, a bit of twang, an oldie with a twist, maybe a surprise.”
Then again, not much about BettySoo isn’t surprising. Plain-faced, petite and freckly, people never seem to expect her large voice and moving songs. “I guess Asian-American singer-songwriters aren’t that common,” she comments. Also uncommon: how did a Korean-American land such a southern name? She laughs, “I’m lucky…it’s right on my birth certificate. Soo’s my dad’s middle name, too. Yep, he’s a boy named Soo.”
“Heat Sin Water Skin – the title of the record itself could be one of the shortest poems ever. This is truly a great record…a recording you will want to add to your library if you have not already done so. I expect we will all be hearing a lot more from this young Austin, Texas singer/songwriter.”
