Description
When MUNDENGE first came out in 1991, the album became an instant favourite of many fans of African music who were lucky enough to obtain a copy. Sadly, the CD quickly went out of print and has been unavailable for years.
Recorded in southern Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), MUNDENGE features some of the most exciting African sounds you are likely to hear. Based upon the popular hits of the day, young 'Mundenge' musicians create their own exciting music using guitars, self-made banjos and likembes (thumb-pianos) and anything they can lay their hands on, including bottles, car engine parts and everyday utensils, cans and tubes, to create a staggering array of sounds. The result is a highly energetic and original sound which is virtually unknown outside the region. A wonderful blend of African guitar styles, a touch of Swahili-rumba, social criticism, fascinating rhythms and lots of raw energy.
Includes 16 page booklet detailing the background of each recording.
