  • Description

The release of The Moken - Sea Gypsies of the Andaman Sea continues the successful collaboration between Topic Records and The National Sound Archive of The British Library. The Moken are one of a small number of tribes of sea gypsies who have been sailing up and down the west coast of the Malay Peninsula for hundreds of years.

This recording was made on a deserted beach between surf and jungle and the music is wild and unpredictable, full of warmth and drama and yet as detached from our world as their hard, uncertain sea-faring lifestyle. The songs draw on their experience and daily lives and actions and interpersonal relationships. The full notes in the extensive booklet fill in the fascinating background to this unique people and paints a vivid picture of their circumstances.
