Description
GUNK is a punk band formed in Tokyo in 2022. The band consists of experienced members who have played in important Japanese punk bands since the 2000s (such as The Gimmies, WAR/ZIT, THE HEADBANGERS, The Raydios and The Faceful). Their sound is characterised by an aggressive and tight style reminiscent of 70s and 80s punk and the Detroit R'n'R sound.
The band was initially formed around Toshi (drummer with Mach Pelican), starting with a sound strongly influenced by Australian punk bands like GOD, The Saints, Eastern Dark and The Chosen Few. After Toshi's departure, Suzuki (ex. Young Ones, Raydios) joined as drummer in 2023, further refining their punk sound. Their music is reminiscent of American rock'n'roll hard punk like The Angry Samoans and The Consumers, but also of the bleak, tense yet catchy melodies of alternative punk rock like Wipers and Mission of Burma. Their sound brings to mind The Fix of Michigan and Venom P. Stinger and Seminal Rats of Melbourne, and their music is as honest as Radio Birdman's!!
The band have played most of their live shows in Tokyo, and in June 2026 they will even open for The Chats in Japan. Their three previously released singles (including a split ep) have all sold out immediately, and they are now releasing their long-awaited first album. This is definitely a record that will blow away your Monday Morning Gunk!!
