Description
Toots Thielemans, the renowned harmonica player and one of the world's great jazz icons, turned 90 years old in April. Challenge Records is celebrating this anniversary with a special live CD and bonus DVD that contains unique material.
Featuring Toots with his excellent quartet, this two disc set was recorded live at various locations in Europe and Japan between 2006 and 2001 and was selected from hours of concert footage that captured the joy, the risks and the interaction of a working band.
The eleven tracks that make up the CD ''90 Yrs.' are a fascinating mix and include three of Toots' originals (one, "Old Friend", recorded with an orchestra in Japan), two from the pen of Antonio Carlos Jobim and a retrospective look at two tunes originally recorded with Bill Evans, "Sno Peas" and "I Do It For Your Love". The bonus DVD presents documentary style footage of the band performing a further six pieces in 2011, including the memorable theme from "Midnight Cowboy" and Toots' own "Bluesette".
"I can say without hesitation that Toots is one of the greatest musicians of our time. On his instrument he ranks with the best that jazz has ever produced. He goes for the heart and makes you cry. We have worked together more times than I can count and he always keeps me coming back for more." - Quincy Jones
Personnel: Toots Thielemans (harmonica, guitar), Karel Boehlee (piano, synthesier), Hein Van de Geyn (bass), Hans van Oosterhout (drums), Toshio Mashima & Shinozaki Strings (track 11)
