Description
The music of the Czech-born Viennese composer Egon Kornauth (1891-1959) was once a staple of Austrian concert-halls. It has largely been forgotten in the half-century since his death. In this pioneering recording Jonathan Powell uncovers the many strands that fed into Kornauth's rich and full-blooded soundworld. The music blends dark, late-Romantic harmony, inventive counterpoint, rhythmic assiduity, a fondness for folk-music and, not least, a straightforward melodic charm. This is the first recording of any of Kornauth's piano music. The British pianist Jonathan Powell, now based in southern Poland, has a reputation for his fearless tackling of ferociously difficult scores - not least the music of Sorabji, of which he recorded several CDs. This disc is the first of two in which he will explores one of the few Viennese composers of the first half of the 20th century to write a generous amount of piano music."
