The Three City Four was formed in 1963 specifically to sing the new songs that were springing up out of the folk revival and the rebellious politics of the early 60s. Featuring Martin Carthy, Roy Bailey and Leon Rosselson before they established themselves as solo artists in their own right, Marion MacKenzie, and Ralph Trainer also feature The Three City Four made an immediate impact, described by one reviewer as ‘sweeping the country with their dazzling arrangements of contemporary material’. The group appeared numerous times on TV, performed in concerts at the Festival Hall, supported Paul Simon at the High Wycombe Town Hall and Carolyn Hester at the Central Hall Westminster. The songs on this CD are compiled from two LPs: ‘The Three City Four’ (Decca 1965) and ‘Smoke & Dust’ (CBS 1967) and are chosen from the cream of that era’s songwriters ( including Ewan MacColl, Leon Rosselson, Sydney Carter and Bob Dylan) as well as poets like Adrian Mitchell and Charles Causley. ‘The Three City Four gave a sparkling performance of contemporary songs with both charm and bite...’ Daily Telegraph October 15, 1966
