Description
Joe Hutton (Smallpipes), Will Atkinson (Mouthorgan) and Willie Taylor (fiddle) all worked as shepherds in Northumberland. They all knew each other over many years and had family connections: Will and Willie were first cousins and Joe's wife's mother's cousin was their aunt Nan Armstrong.
In retirement they joined together and became known as' The Shepherds' and during the late 1980s and early 1990s they gained a huge following outside their native homeland. They travelled all over England playing at concerts, clubs and festivals, led initially by concertina player Alistair Anderson.
The Shepherds were true traditional musicians who played in a style which has it's roots in the exceptionally strong traditions of the North East of England and these 'live' show just good they were.
