The Ray Anderson-Marty Ehrlich Quartet
Description
Ray Anderson and Marty Ehrlich first played together thirty years ago in one of Anthony Braxton's groundbreaking groups. Since that time their paths have crossed repeatedly but it wasn't until 2009 that they formed their own group. 'Hear You Say' catches this innovative quartet at the Willisau Festival where they performed an impassioned set that drew on bebop, klezmer, New Orleans and funk - and all of it steeped in the Blues.
Joining Anderson on trombone and Ehrlich on alto and soprano saxophone/clarinet are bassist Brad Jones and drummer Matt Wilson. Between them the leaders have played with names as diverse as Charlie Haden, George Gruntz, Jack DeJohnette, Dr. John and Marianne Faithful. Jones has worked with Don Byron and Dave Douglas and Wilson has put in time with Joe Lovano and John Scofield, amongst others. These wide ranging playing experiences are reflected in this outstanding live recording which is both freewheeling and fun.
Personnel: Ray Anderson (trombone), Marty Ehrlich (clarinet, alto and soprano saxophone), Brad Jones (bass), Matt Wilson (drums)
