Description
JOHN COLTRANE: MY FAVORITE THINGS
LIMITED EDITION - CD PACKAGED AS A MINI REPLICA LP WITH PAPERSLEEVE AND GATEFOLD SLEEVE. 24-Bit Mastered
Although seemingly impossible to comprehend, this landmark jazz date made in 1960 was recorded in less than three days, during several marathon sessions that produced still more music that would later be issued on subsequent albums: Coltrane Plays the Blues, Coltrane's Sound, and Coltrane Legacy.
"My Favorite Things", the title tune, belongs to Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II's musical The Sound of Music. My Favorite Things was a remarkable success for both Trane and the soprano sax. The swaying waltz rhythm is hypnotic, and the exotic sound of the soprano sax, haunting. "But Not for Me" would only remain in Coltrane's repertoire for a short time. The same can be said of "Summertime". Both "My Favorite Things" and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" became regular numbers in Trane's concert repertoire.
John Coltrane was a regular attraction at the Newport Jazz Festival, but his Newport debut as a leader took place on July 1, 1961. Coltrane played three tunes on that date, "Impressions", "Naima" and "My Favorite Things"), all of which are include here as bonus tracks.
JOHN COLTRANE, tenor & soprano sax; McCOY TYNER, piano; STEVE DAVIS, bass
ELVIN JONES, drums. New York, October 1960. Produced by Nesuhi Ertegün.
