20TH CENTURY MASTERWORKS – 180g COLOURED VINYL SERIES

Contains new specially prepared liner notes by PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ's
writer BRIAN MORTON and by Paris' prestigious JAZZ MAGAZINE.

ETTA JAMES: AT LAST + 6 bonus tracks (Green Vinyl)

"The question of whether Etta James became a pop singer, a jazz singer, or a blues singer needn't detain you long. She was all of those, as At Last bears out, and more besides. James touched on gospel, doo-wop and rhythm'n'blues with equal facility. "Dance With Me, Henry" was a hit, but renamed "The Wallflower" and covered by Georgia Gibbs. Because James had a composition credit, it made her some money, but she didn't like to be bested. She made sure that the next time it would be her name on the label. " Penguin Guide to Jazz

"At Last!, her debut LP, made for the celebrated Chicago label Chess, certainly is one of her most memorable. It's impossible to not be moved by the power of her voice, beginning with the opening notes of "Anything to Say You're Mine". Every phrase, every word is attacked with an energy that commands respect. But beware, this young woman (she was only 22 at the time) could also take on the sweetest forms of a melancholy ballad, such as "Stormy Weather", and manage to achieve tenderness. At Last! is one of the key soul music albums of the early 1960's." Jazz Magazine

ETTA JAMES, lead vocals; The Riley Hampton Orchestra. Arranged and conducted by Riley Hampton. Recorded in Chicago, Illinois, 1960 and 1961. Original sessions produced by Phil and Leonard Chess.

    Description

    Description

Limited edition classic LP, reissued on 180g vinyl, audiophile pressing.

This quintessential collector's vinyl edition includes Etta James' sensational debut LP, At Last!, first released by the Chess Records subsidiary label Argo in 1960.

The original ten tracks from the album are akin to a greatest hits collection, with signature gems like "At Last", "All I Could Do Was Cry", "Anything to Say You're Mine", "I Just Want to Make Love to You", and "Sunday Kind of Love", among others. In addition to this original masterpiece, 4 bonus tracks from the same period are also included.

    Description

Classic Etta James album available as an LP picture disc, pressed on 180g vinyl.

This masterpiece remains to this day, one of the best soul/R&B albums ever. Here Etta James was comfortable and convincing, singing pop standards as she did on the magnificent title track, which was written in 1941 and originally recorded by Glenn Miller's orchestra. "At Last" became Etta's signature song. It reached number two on the R&B chart and number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her powerhouse contralto voice was matched with the sumptuous, bluesy string arrangements of Riley Hampton, and James truly came into her own as a singer.

"After spending a few years in limbo after scoring her first R&B hits 'Dance With Me, Henry' and 'Good Rocking Daddy,' Etta James returned to the spotlight in 1961 with her first Chess release, At Last! James made both the R&B and pop charts with the album's title cut, 'All I Could Do Was Cry,' and 'Trust in Me.' What makes At Last! a great album is not only the solid hits it contains, but also the strong variety of material throughout. On this album one hears the singer at her peak in a swinging and varied program of blues, R&B, and jazz standards." ***** AllMusic, Stephen Cook
