  • Description

Einzelganger is a rare and highly experimental project from Giorgio Moroder's most transformative period. Einzelganger, which translates from German as 'individualist' or 'lone wolf,' represents Moroder's most abstract exploration of electronic composition. Released in 1975, the Einzelganger project was where he and engineer Reinhold Mack began delving into the Moog synthesizer's capabilities, moving away from his earlier pop-centric approach to explore the technical innovations that would go on to define his legacy. The album is a pioneering masterclass in modular synthesis and vocoder processing. Spanning nine tracks, the set moves from the rhythmic title track, a bouncing synthesizer motif underpinned by flanged percussion, to the spacious, drone-heavy textures of 'Aus (The End).' Unlike the orchestral disco dominant at the time, Einzelganger utilised early analogue sequencing and electronic percussion to create a stark, robotic soundscape that predated yet signposted the industrial and synth-pop movements to materialize in the late 1970s. Primarily recorded at Munich's Musicland Studios in collaboration with engineer Reinhold Mack, the album originally received only a limited release via Moroder's Oasis imprint via Casablanca Records, the project remains a critical link in Moroder's evolution. It was during these sessions that he refined the technical fluency with sequencers that would, only two years later, culminate in Donna Summers' era-defining 'I Feel Love.' As an elusive, self-contained experiment, Einzelganger captures a visionary artist stripping away the commercial veneer to build the blueprints for the future of electronic music.
