Description
The Brill Building is an 11-story Art Deco office block, at 1619 Broadway, Manhattan, where the songwriters who shaped 1950s and 60s rock & roll, R&B and pop music wrote, demoed and published their songs.
The 'First Team' comprised seven songwriting duos: Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, and Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich.
Other significant Brill Building songwriters included Ben Raleigh, Jack Keller, Bob Hilliard, Phil Spector, Paul Evans, Hank Hunter, Helen Miller, Tony Powers, Larry Kolber, Paul Hampton, Mark Barkan, Bobby Darin, Rose Marie McCoy and others.
