  • Description

The 'Caledonia' album by Alan Roberts and Dougie MacLean was originally recorded in 1977 at Fairview Recording Studio in Willerby, Hull. Produced by Nigel Pegrum and engineered by Roy Neve and Keith Herd it was first released in 1978. The album also features Nigel Pegrum on percussion and Jon Gillaspie on synthesizer. Dougie MacLean (OBE) is a Scottish singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Described by AllMusic as "one of Scotland's premier singer-songwriters" MacLean has performed under both his own name, and as part of multiple folk bands, since the mid-1970s. The title song 'Caledonia' featuring the Delmé String Quartet is a modern Scottish folk ballad written by Dougie MacLean and which not only has become the most popular of all MacLean's recordings it has since been covered by a great number of artists and has also become known as Scotland's "unofficial" national anthem. MacLean wrote the song in less than 10 minutes on a beach in Brittany, France, feeling homesick for Scotland. He said "I was in my early 20's and had been busking around with some Irish guys. I was genuinely homesick. I'd always lived in Perthshire. I played it to the guys when I got back to the youth hostel where we were staying and that was the final straw - we all went home the next day." He adds "It took about 10 minutes but sometimes that's how songs happen. I'm still amazed at how much it has become part of common culture. There's not a pub singer, busker or pipe band that doesn't play it." Originally mastered by George Peckham this re-issue has been digitally re-mastered by John Rivers in May 2019 at Woodbine Street Studio in Leamington Spa.
