Description
The Butcher is a folk opera...a ghost story told in songs.
Singer-songwriter and musical adventurer Paul Mosley shares the singing duties on this beautifully arranged and produced album with guests taking on different roles: Jamie Lawson (whose eponymously titled album reached number 1 in 2015), Josienne Clarke (BBC Folk Awards Winner 2015), Esther Dee (ex Medieaval Baebe) and Carolyn Mark (Canadian singer songwriter, Juno nominee). The musicians, under the name The Red Meat Orchestra feature Paul's old band Moses, Bird Radio, musicians from Florence & The Machine, Feist, Benjamin Clementine and Patrick Wolf's bands. The album is quite some musical adventure that oozes quality throughout.
Paul Mosley has been described as writing "genius songs" (BBC6 Music) and having "the loveliest of voices" (Rhythm Magazine). Previously front man of alt folk favourites Moses (Soho Festival Best Live Act, BBC Radio 2 play lists and fans from Graham Coxon to Jamie Oliver) he's established himself as a solo artist with many admirers of his craft:
"What a voice!" - Jools Holland
"A cults cult, a real gem" - Drowned in Sound
His 2nd album was declared "A genuine lost classic" by BBC6 Music and Volume Magazine described his songs as "uniquely comforting and disturbing at the same time" which he liked. His last release, the sumptuous A Chattering of Birds, was also a critical success:
"...sometimes-disturbing magic realist folk-pop...a honeyed voice that could calm George Galloway" **** - Q Magazine
"Paul Mosley knows how to craft a good song and present it beautifully...great modern folk writing" **** - Trevor Raggatt, R2/Rock'n'Reel
"Paul Mosley, on this album, is not just good. He is magnificent. The band too. You can quote me!" - Frank Gutch Jr., FAME
In addition to his own musical projects, Paul composes for theatre, especially puppet theatre and has worked with several notable companies. Over the past 2 years he's toured providing the live soundtrack to a number of puppet shows (his own compositions) including the recently successful Barely Human Puppets new adaptation of Beowulf.
