This new 2CD set presents the extraordinary inaugural concert of the 2nd International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments which took place in 2023 and features three previous winners Martha Argerich, Bruce Liu, Tomasz Ritter and Naruhiko Kawaguchi, performed on period instruments. The idea of the International Chopin Competition on period instruments had been born more than a decade earlier; mounting such an event was a natural extension of the concert and recording work pursued by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute since 2004. With the Polish {oh!} Orkiestra, founded and superbly directed by Martyna Pastuszka, and under the baton of one of the masters of historically informed performance, Vaclav Luks, artists from seemingly distant pianistic galaxies sat down in turn at Paul McNulty's copy of an 1819 Graf and at an original 1858 Erard. Featuring Martha Argerich, one of the greatest figures in music over recent decades and winner of the 1965 International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, Bruce Liu, a rising star of world pianism and winner of the same competition in 2021, Tomasz Ritter, winner of the First International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments and Naruhiko Kawaguchi, Second Prize winner at that competition. Together they juxtapose Beethoven's Piano Concertos No.3, No.1, his Fantasy in C Minor for Piano and Mixed Choir with Fujikura's Bridging Realms performed by Naruhiko Kawaguchi.
