Description
“Knappertsbusch in the year of his seventieth birthday conducted this opera to a greater glory.
The new Gurnemanz was the American bass-baritone Jerome Hines. Tall and handsome , he had a fine presence and a noble voice for the part.
His interpretation was quite different from that of most artists. Gurnemanz is usually the wise , fatherly old man. Hines was ascetic, rather withdrawn, and more the monk than a former knight, but it was interesting performance. Some of the most beautiful singing came from the new Amfortas, Eberhard Waechter. “Penelope Turing
Taken from the Bayreuth performance of 1958, this newly remastered recording also features the Choir and Orchestra of the Bayreuther Festspieler.
