During his lifetime, Jacobus Barbireau (c 1455-1491) was held in high esteem as a composer, singer and singing master of the choir boys at Antwerp Cathedral and was apparently even entrusted with a diplomatic mission by Emperor Maximilian I. Today, he is generally forgotten and only known to a handful of specialists. Today he is generally forgotten and known only to a handful of specialists. Although only a few of his compositions have survived the centuries, he may be considered one of the most important creators of Flemish polyphony in the autumn of the Middle Ages, as this recording with Beauty Farm impressively demonstrates.
