MILES DAVIS / SKETCHES OF SPAIN + BONUS TRACK
Arranged and conducted by Gil Evans
Presented here is the complete original Miles Davis-Gil Evans album Sketches of Spain (Columbia CS8271), an authentic milestone of jazz history. The LP marked the third collaboration between Davis and Evans (following Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess).
As a bonus to this masterpiece, we have included "Song of Our Country", a track that completes the sessions, as well as two tunes previously recorded by Miles that also share the Spanish feeling and which, in a sense, foreshadow the making of Sketches of Spain.
Also added are two tracks from Miles & Gil Evans' 1961 Carnegie Hall concert: "Spring Is Here", which they didn't include on any of their studio albums, and the live version of "Concierto de Aranjuez".
MILES DAVIS, trumpet & flugelhorn on all tracks With orchestra arranged and conducted by GIL EVANS. New York, November 20, 1959 & March 10, 1960.
Original sessions produced by Teo Macero & Irving Townsend.
Down Beat: Sketches of Spain
"This recording is one of the most important musical triumphs that this century has yet produced. It brings together under the same aegis two realms that in the past have often worked against one another –the world of the heart and the world of the mind. To Davis and Evans goes not the distinction of five or 10 or a zillion stars in a review rating, but the burden of continuing to show us the way." Bill Mathieu
