Alberdi and Mena, the two musicians aimed to extend the timespan of their repertoire by confronting the music of Josquin Desprez – the great Franco-Flemish composer who bridged the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance – with music by four Spanish composers of our time. They asked Jesús Torres, José María Sánchez-Verdú, Joan Magrané and Gabriel Erkoreka to write four pieces inspired by Desprez’ motets and chansons. We come to the end of the itinerary of musical proposals on this CD with one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most fascinating creations, the Chaconne from his Partita for solo violin, BWV 1004. This extremely well-known piece is featured here in a special version: a recomposition based on the musicological research of Helga Thoene, who demonstrated that the entire Chaconne is exclusively based on several Lutheran chorales.
