The fourth album by Brazilian singer-songwriter Ian Lasserre is aptly titled "America Zureta" ("Crazy America"). After his second album Atimo made it into the World Music Charts Europe's Top 100 of 2020 and his track "Minha Bahia" has since gathered over a million streams on Spotify, the Bahia-born Ian Lasserre has grown into a firmly established figure in Latin folk. Influenced on the one hand by giants of Musica Popular Brasileira such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Joao Donato, Moacir Santos, and Toninho Horta, Lasserre is equally at home in contemporary jazz, gently weaving nuances of pop, rock, and reggae into his richly textured songs. On America Zureta, themes such as neoliberalism, environmental destruction, and, conversely, respect for Indigenous peoples once again take center stage across the seven tracks - songs that nevertheless radiate a wonderful, if slightly melancholic, sense of ease.
