Description
Throughout his career Larry Coryell has been a part of multiple guitar ensembles, most famously as a charter member of the trio with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia in 1979. 'Night of Jazz Guitars' sees this renowned virtuoso join forces with three extremely gifted young Bavarian jazz guitarists in Helmut Kagerer, Paulo Morello and Andreas Dombert in a studio recorded programme of originals and standards.
Horace Silver's "Cookin' at the Continental" opens the album and includes the expected fretboard fireworks from Coryell together with the same from Kagerer, a Wes Montgomery inspired player who sculpts bold, swinging lines. By way of contrast, Dombert's dreamy, chamber-like "Koala" and his adaptation of Miles Davis' and Bill Evans' "Blue in Green" show what a fine arranger he is in addition to being a gifted guitarist. Morello, however, is equally adept at jazz and bossa nova and his skills in the latter department are well to the fore in "Noites Caracas", a rhythmically charged romp through a popular Brazilian song. The concluding "All the Things You Are" teems with swirling counterpoint lines, moving harmonies and complex reharmonisations and makes for a superb finale.
