Description
Canadian bassist, vocalist and composer Brandi Disterheft is fast becoming one of jazz's brightest lights, thanks to her fiery bass playing, charismatic performances and her innovative writing style, informed by various influences, from Mingus to Bjork. 'Gratitude' is her third album and features an all-star band including Renee Rosnes on piano, Gregory Hutchinson on drums, Sean Jones on trumpet, Vincent Herring on alto saxophone and Anne Drummond on bass and alto flute.
'Gratitude', consists of six original compositions by Disterheft, Renee Rosnes' "Mizmahta" and songs composed by the Gershwin's, Burke and Van Heusen and Gene McDaniels. It takes the listener back to the roots of jazz, from the New Orleans influenced horn arrangements on the title track "Gratitude", to the up-tempo, swinging and fiery "Portrait of Duke."
Brandi has previously studied with jazz stars Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Rufus Reid, Don Thompson and Danilo Perez and has relocated to New York City in order to study with legendary bassist Ron Carter. Brandi has opened for such top acts as Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck, and Chris Botti, and performed as featured soloist with the Canada Pops Orchestra at the age of twenty-one. Her debut album won her the 2008 JUNO award (Canada's Grammy) for best Traditional Jazz Album of the Year.
"Her music is picturesque and enticing, as she grabs the blues, dips into bebop, lays down a cool ballad and even has the listener dancing. Disterheft comes into her own and shows why she's been creating a stir. A remarkable talent!" - Jerry D'Souza, AllAboutJazz.com
