Description
He wasn't as prolific or celebrated as his brother Brownie, but guitarist Stick McGhee wrote and recorded some great boozy blues and R&B from 1947 into the '50s - including the immortal "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee", a tune that has been revived by many over the years.
McGhee's first recorded version of the tune was only regionally successful when first released in 1947, but a rollicking 1949 remake for Atlantic Records was a massive R&B hit (in fact Atlantic's first hit record), with brother Brownie chiming in on guitar and harmony vocal. It was then that a reissue of the original charted as well. Both versions are here. Stick went on to record more great booze numbers such as "Whiskey, Women And Loaded Dice", "Jungle Juice" and "Double Crossin' Liquor" all included in his 42 tracks on this 105 track compilation.
These are matched with 47 tracks by Brownie McGhee and 16 by Sonny Terry. On a few they duet but this was a period during which both men pursued separate commercial careers, with Brownie in particular looking to become an urban R&B star. The usual authoritative text tells the story.
