While a number of his contemporary artists were also influenced by rock & roll, such as Claude François, Eddy Mitchell and Jerry Williams, none of them were as beholden to the original sources, or as enduringly successful, as Hallyday. His appropriations of Elvis Presley and James Dean captured the French imagination, but - language barrier aside - they were often too stylized and imitative to resonate with audiences used to the genuine article. Hallyday never achieved recognition in the United States or Britain as a large part of his repertoire consisted of French-language covers of early American twist and rock & roll hits. However, he remains the only authentic French rock & roller - the only stage performer, above all, to hold his fans in the palm of his hand like his idols across the Atlantic. France needed its own national rock singer, and it got Johnny.
