Founded on an inexhaustibly rich dialogue, Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord obbligato (BWV 1027-1029) rank among the finest gems of Baroque chamber music. Written most likely in the 1740s, they reveal the full expressive depth of the Cantor of Leipzig, who gives the harpsichord a strikingly modern concertante role and the viola da gamba a voice that is by turns lyrical and introspective. In this new recording, Margaret Little and Christophe Gauthier offer a deeply eloquent interpretation in which supple phrasing and clarity of dialogue illuminate the vitality and poetry of these works. Margaret Little has distinguished herself as a soloist and chamber musician, notably with Les Voix humaines, the ensemble she co-founded with Susie Napper. Renowned for her refined playing, she has recorded more than one hundred albums for ATMA Classique. Montreal harpsichordist Christophe Gauthier regularly collaborates with the Orchestre Metropolitain, Arion, and the Studio de musique ancienne de Montreal.
