Description
Brought together by virtuoso award-winning Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, a musician who famously combines classical techniques with jazz improvisation, this quartet featuring saxophonist Michele Polga, bassist Thomas Fonnesbaek and drummer Mauro Beggio is a unified group with an equally unified sound - a quartet with no appointed leader.
Pieranunzi, Polga, Fonnesbaek, and Beggio have each absorbed, in their own way, stylistic elements layered through tradition, as well as more recent, US-driven sounds, which they tailor seamlessly throughout the tracks on Perspectives, with a particularly meticulous focus on sound design. The result in headphones is the mixing worthy of a top tier engineer (just listen to Beggio's inspired solo on 'Back and Forth' to catch even the last few hertz of cymbals floating in space), it's also because these musicians have trained their ears to the most subtle acoustic possibilities of their instruments, placing them at the service of the music with great naturalness and sincerity. This is a quartet - not a soloist's project with skilled colleagues - where the absence of any "leader mentality" becomes the key to exploring new sonic territory.
