  • Description

In 1960, celebrated jazz critic Nat Hentoff called Charles Mingus to record a number of sessions for the new Candid label. Mingus was given absolute freedom on these sessions, and the results of the first date were issued on the celebrated Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. The band consists of a pianoless quartet with trumpeter Ted Curson, alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy (who also plays bass clarinet on one track), Mingus on bass and veteran Mingus drummer Dannie Richmond. Despite the brevity of Charles Mingus' working relationship with Candid, the bassist was quite happy with their association. His time with the label was short lived due to the company's brief existence within the industry, and not because of any problem between the bassist and the label's owners or producers. (Candid Records would disappear nearly six months after the last of these recordings was made.) Behind Mingus' association with Candid was Nat Hentoff, who also authored the liner notes of all of his albums for the label. After Candid's disappearance, Mingus would continue recording for Atlantic records, beginning with his first album for the label, Oh Yeah (taped on November 6, 1961).

    Description

Limited edition 180g audiophile pressing. Despite the brevity of Charles Mingus' working relationship with the small label Candid Records, the bassist was quite happy with their association and record three albums during his brief time with the label, 'Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus', 'New Port Rebels, and 'Mingus'.

Behind Mingus' association with Candid was jazz writer Nat Hentoff, who also authored the liner notes of all three of the Mingus albums for the label. Nat not only did he sign Mingus but, by his sympathetic approach in the studio, enabled him to create the landmark album presented here, 'Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus', which features Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond.

"Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus "Mingus is a musician of unquestionable power. He again demonstrates that he can do just about anything with his instrument. He and Richmond react beautifully together throughout, and the interaction of the whole group is one of the salient features of the album. Recommended as an important document of the current scene."- **** Ira Gitler, DownBeat
