    WAXTIME IN COLOR

    CANNONBALL ADDERLEY
    SOMETHIN’ ELSE

Limited Edition 180g coloured vinyl (ORANGE)

JULIAN “CANNONBALL” ADDERLEY alto sax; MILES DAVIS trumpet; HANK JONES piano; SAM JONES bass; ART BLAKEY drums. Hackensack, New Jersey, March 9, 1958.

Includes bonus track from the same session ‘ALLISON’S UNCLE’, not include on the original LP

“Back in New York, Cannonball, who had signed a deal to do a record, asked me to play on the date, which I did as a favour. The record was called ‘Somethin’ Else’ and was very nice.” Miles Davis included the above brief comment about this LP in his autobiography.

And it was truly a very nice record. In fact, even though it wasn’t regarded at the time as more than a regular recording session by professional jazzmen – like Dom Cerulli states in his review for Down Beat – the popularity of this LP grew until it came to be considered one of the best small group sessions ever.”

    Description

Somethin' Else is a Jazz album by Cannonball Adderley released in 1958 that appears among many rankings of "jazz essentials" In October 1957, Cannonball Adderley disbanded his group to join Miles Davis' sextet (with whom they recorded, among others, the legendary Kind of Blue). Somethin' Else is the first appearance of Miles and Cannonball Adderley together. Although Miles is only a sideman, he is at the centre of the entire album and plays most of the early choruses, composed the title track and chose most of the tracks.

This release is part of the New Ermitage collection available from January 2024: 18 jazz and soul titles reissued on yellow vinyl with new codes and renewed graphics.

    Description

The complete classic album "Something Else" in which Cannonball Adderley - by then a member of the Miles Davis Sextet - was joined by his boss, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and the great Art Blakey. All five musicians shine on this album, which is one of the most celebrated in the history of jazz. As a bonus, Cannonball's 1957 album "Sophisticated Swing". The 16-page booklet includes the original liner notes for both albums, plus the 1958 Down Beat review for Somethin' Else by Dom Cerulli and the complete 1959 Cannonball Adderley BLINDFOLD TEST by Leonard Feather.

The Poll Winners label is devoted to the CD reissue of albums that received the maximum 5-star rating in a Down Beat album review. This only rarely happened, and most of the Down Beat albums have become true classics revered by all music lovers. These new editions present the complete original 5-star albums, which are expanded to include interesting bonus albums or tracks by the artist at the peak of their talents.

    Description

Cannonball Adderley had already released many albums as a leader by the time "Somethin’ Else" was recorded. However, at the time he was working as a member of the stellar Miles Davis Sextet, which also featured John Coltrane on tenor sax, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb.

While Miles’ presence on this date was a favour to his band member, the rhythm section on Somethin’ Else bears no relation at all to Miles’ group. In fact, Davis’ only other recorded collaboration with pianist Hank Jones was a 1947 septet session for Aladdin under the leadership of Coleman Hawkins. In spite of the fact that this was not a working group, the LP was a masterpiece, and one of Cannonball’s most acclaimed albums under his own name.

Dom Cerulli gave it five stars in his DownBeat review, stating that, “There’s really not too much to say about this set. It’s the result of five thoroughly professional jazzmen playing together and making it. The outstanding side to me is ‘Autumn Leaves’, on which Davis displays his moving lyricism.”
