  • Description

Limited edition 180g vinyl, one-off high-definition audiophile pressing with deluxe inner sleeve - the complete album + bonus track.

"Although Miles Ahead was Miles Davis' first recording with the Gil Evans Orchestra, it was certainly not Evans and Davis' first collaboration. Gil and Miles' 1948-49 recordings both in the studio and broadcasted live from the Royal Roost in New York are among the true jewels of jazz history. The same can be said about Miles Ahead, a completely refined product in which the arrangements, the repertoire and the mood of every improvisation were carefully selected." - ***** DownBeat

    Description

"Miles Ahead" was the first album recorded together by Davis and Evans, who would later continue their partnership with albums such as "Porgy and Bess" and "Sketches of Spain". Gil Evans structured the ten songs that make up the album in a sort of suite, without interruptions between tracks. Davis, unusually on flugelhorn, is the only soloist in Miles Ahead, arranged with a characteristic horn section. The album was awarded the 1994 Grammy Hall of Fame Award and celebrate the new "cool" sound that was associated with it and which gave birth to a new jazz style.

This release is part of the New Ermitage collection available from January 2024: 18 jazz and soul titles reissued on yellow vinyl with new codes and renewed graphics.

    Description

The complete album + 10 bonus tracks, 16-page booklet included with memorabilia and updated liner notes. Miles Ahead was Miles Davis' first recording with the Gil Evans Orchestra and which opened the way for many more collaborations between the two. Presented here in its entirety, it also includes the five 1962 orchestral tracks from Miles and Gil's last studio collaboration, Quiet Nights.

Also included are three tracks from a 1961 Carnegie Hall concert, which was their only live recording together and which included three compositions from Miles Ahead, as well as an arrangement of Spring Is Here, which never made it into any of the Miles Davis-Gil Evans studio albums. As an appropriate closing track, Miles' 1953 original quartet version of Miles Ahead is also included.
